CLASSIC COUNTDOWN: 10 BEST SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO'S (Since 1975)
In this edition, the top ten runnings of the San Juan Capistrano since 1975 are presented as determined by Jon White. Run at the marathon distance of 1-3/4 miles on the turf, the San Juan Capistrano has been won by many of racing's greatest grass stars over the years.
Although this race was first contested in 1935, it wasn't until Santa Anita installed the turf course in 1954 that it was first run on grass and became the world's first $100,000 turf race.
The staggering 1-3/4 mile San Juan Capistrano is best known for its 1966 renewal which many consider the greatest moment in Santa Anita's history. 59-year-old Hall-of-Fame rider Johnny Longden rode the last race of his career in the 1966 San Juan Capistrano aboard GEORGE ROYAL. GEORGE ROYAL's scant nose victory was certainly a fairytale ending for riding legend Johnny Longden.
