BARBARO: 5 YEARS LATER (2011)
This feature discusses the past five years with the personalities that were thrust into the limelight as the brilliant Kentucky Derby winner battled daunting odds while racing fans and the general public rallied in a wide variety of ways, expressing their love and support through a time frame that saw emotions sway almost on a weekly basis.
With interviews of BARBARO's owners Gretchen and Roy Jackson, as well as esteemed New Bolton surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, trainer Michael Matz, and a number of other folks that were close to the charismatic horse, and witnessed his daily battle and the outpouring of support from a wide range of admirers - BARBARO's endearing saga is re-told and, in the end, what positives came out of it all.
Gretchen Jackson chose her words carefully as she recalled the emotional toll it took on everyone and admitted that it was two years before complete normalcy returned, while Matz preferred to remember the good times.
BARBARO's legacy will remain unblemished, and his fight galvanized so many, uniting the racing community in numerous instances. Since then, the Laminitis Research Foundation, established in his name, has allowed the New Bolton Center to buy new equipment and further research and education of laminitis, which Richardson said has improved greatly in the last five years. He remains very optimistic that even more substantial advances will be realized in the mechanisms of laminitis in next decade. The five-year anniversary of BARBARO's passing evokes memories and fosters advances in laminitis research...don't miss it.
