SEATTLE SLEW 6 EXTENDED RACES TIME CAPSULE
6 of SEATTLE SLEW's best races are presented in this historic time capsule honoring this legend:
1) 1977 Kentucky Derby
2) 1977 Preakness
3) 1977 Belmont
4 ) 1978 Marlboro Cup
5) 1978 Woodward Stakes
6) 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup
ALL RACES ARE SHOWN IN THEIR ENTIRETY FROM START TO FINISH and many showing the quarter mile fractions for those of you who like to watch the clock.
1) In his Derby, "SLEW" recovered from a disastrous start and drew off by two lengths in the company of FOR THE MOMENT, GET THE AXE and RUN DUSTY RUN. Watch as "SLEW" is draped in roses in the winner's circle
2) "SLEW" next captured the 102nd running of the Preakness by 1-1/2 lengths over IRON CONSTITUTION; others in the field included CORMORANT and J.O. TOBIN. This segment also includes very rare scenes of all the horses being loaded into the gate at the start of the race
3) The Belmont wasn't "SLEW's" best distance being a top "mile horse", even so "SLEW" leads throughout and triumphed by four lengths
If "SLEW" had never raced at age four, many of his critics would have continued to fault him for beating what they considered a bad bunch of three-year-olds in 1977. But in the late Summer and Fall of 1978 he proved his greatness beyond a doubt in the:
4) 1978 Marlboro Cup - the first ever meeting between two Triple Crown winners ("SLEW" and AFFIRMED). Witness exclusive footage of the recently retired FOREGO leading the COMPLETE post parade of horses: AFFIRMED, DARBY CREEK ROAD, COX'S RIDGE, NASTY AND BOLD and SEATTLE SLEW. "SLEW" would lead wire to wire and defeat AFFIRMED by 2-1/2 lengths
5) "SLEW" would win the Woodward against top contenders EXCELLER, IT'S FREEZING and GREAT CONTRACTOR by four lengths without drawing a deep breath; included in this race is loading gate scenes of all the horses and a post race interview with "SLEW's" rider, ANGEL CORDERO
In the final race covered:
6) Witness SEATTLE SLEW breaking through the starting gate of the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup and having to be re-loaded. He would go on to run second on this day to EXCELLER in a field which also included the great AFFIRMED, LIFE'S HOPE and GREAT CONTRACTOR. Some said "SLEW's" false start compromised his chances but he was so gallant in defeat that it underlined his greatness even more so than most of his victories. He engaged in a speed duel early in the race then almost out gamed EXCELLER at the finish. Many observers thought SEATTLE SLEW would have done the impossible and won it all in a couple more jumps
SEATTLE SLEW favored in every race except the Marlboro Cup won 14-of-17 starts. No greater compliment can be paid to him than these four words: he was a racehorse. Those of us who saw him race and recognized his ability at an early age will always be grateful that he came along to show us that the legendary ones don't need excuses; they just go out there and get the job done. A terrific piece of racing history in honor of the immortal SEATTLE SLEW and his racing accomplishments can be yours!
