2002 ECLIPSE AWARDS (Entire Televised Broadcast)
Eclipse Awards are bestowed upon the Thoroughbred horses and individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them the title of Champion in their respective divisions. The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th Century racehorse and foundation sire ECLIPSE, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in eighteen starts, including eight walkovers. ECLIPSE sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.
The 2002 Eclipse Awards were handed out and with all the debating about AZERI's Horse of the Year credentials, it turned out to be a landslide. The daughter of JADE HUNTER did not defeat males during her 2002 campaign, but she certainly dominated them in the voting for racing's highest honor. AZERI, owned by the Allen Paulson Living Trust and trained by LAURA DeSEROUX received 84% of all total votes notching out WAR EMBLEM, LEFT BANK and ROCK OF GIBRALTAR. AZERI became the first female to be voted Horse-of-the-Year since LADY'S SECRET in 1986, joining other distaffers ALL ALONG, TWILIGHT TEAR and BUSHER.
Other awards went to ORIENTATE (Champion Sprinter), STORM FLAG FLYING (Champion Two-Year-Old Filly), VINDICATION
(Champion Two-Year-Old Colt), WAR EMBLEM (Three-Year-Old Champion Male), FARDA AMIGA (Three-Year-Old Champion Filly), LEFT BANK (Champion Older Male), AZERI (Champion Older Female), GOLDEN APPLES (Champion Turf Female) and HIGH CHAPARRAL (Champion Turf Male).
In the people categories, Richard Englander just squeaked by The Thoroughbred Corp. and Juddmonte Farms in the outstanding owner category. Juddmonte Farms beat out Harry Mangurian, winning two of the three polls, in the outstanding breeder category, while the remaining three categories were sweeps. BOBBY FRANKEL easily beat out STEVE ASMUSSEN and LAURA DeSEROUX in the outstanding trainer category, JERRY BAILEY finished well ahead of EDGAR PRADO in the outstanding jockey category, and the ever exuberant RYAN FOGELSONGER dominated JOHN McKEE in the outstanding apprentice jockey category.
The Eclipse Awards are presented by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers Association and the Daily Racing Form. The Eclipse Awards give us a chance to reflect on the best equine and human performances of the year; the goal is to tell the stories behind the most pivotal moments and players in Thoroughbred racing and make the viewer feel as though he or she is right there in the room with the athletes and others who make our sport great!
Don't miss the excitement of the culmination of another year of great racing...the 2002 ECLIPSE AWARDS!
