SHERGAR (The Movie)
SHERGAR has never been recovered and no suspects were ever apprehended - the case still remains open and is a painful mystery to all who loved him. Twenty years later, retired jockey Walter Swinburn, who, at 19-years-old, rode SHERGAR to victory in the Derby, is still haunted by memories of the horse he called, "a stunning winner." "They used to call SHERGAR bomb-proof," Swinburn told Sky News. "Not only was he a fantastic racehorse, which everyone knew, he also had a fantastic temperament to go with it. And I owe a huge debt to him," Swinburn added. "To this day he was the best racehorse I ever rode."
In addition to the Derby double (Epsom and Irish), SHERGAR won the 1981 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Eng-G1), Chester Vase Stakes (Eng-G3), and the Classic Trial (Eng-G3). SHERGAR scored a runner-up finish in the 1980 William Hill Futurity Stakes (Eng-G1).
He was trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Out of the winning *VAL DE LOIR mare SHARMEEN, SHERGAR won six of eight career starts, missing the board only once, and collected $979,252 in his two-year racing career.
Credence was lent to the theft's IRA connection when a former IRA police informer claimed the organization took SHERGAR but had been forced to shoot the animal within hours of the kidnapping as he became stubborn, uncooperative, unruly and unmanageable.
Swinburn remains hopeful the shroud of mystery will be lifted soon, but keeps with him fond memories of his famous mount. "Like I said back then, I was a passenger on a very good horse and that's exactly right to this day," Swinburn said. "He just took it in his stride and made the job much easier for me."
This made-for-tv movie features a reform-school runaway who tries to save a famous Irish race horse champion, SHERGAR, from being shot by its IRA kidnappers after their ransom demands are refused. Based on the true story of the unsolved kidnapping of the Aga Kahn's, beloved SHERGAR; featuring Ian Holm, David Warner and Mickey Rourke.
