PEBBLES, THE FILLY: A HEART STRONGER THAN STONE
See early training footage of the daughter of SHARPEN UP at Newmarket and some of her legendary flare-ups. Witness her transformation from two to three-years-old as she comes into her own and emerges as a force to be reckoned with in some of England's most prestigious graded stakes races.
PEBBLES' whole story is branded with resilience and courage; she ran against the colts and won against the best of them, top-class horses such as RAINBOW QUEST, SLIP ANCHOR, THEATRICAL, PALACE MUSIC, MOHOGANY, COMANCHEE RUN, STRAWBERRY ROAD.
See film footage of her most outstanding races: 1983 William Hill Cheveley Park Stakes, 1984 Nell Gwyn Stakes, 1984 General Accident One Thousand Guineas, 1984 Coronation Stakes, 1984 Dubai Champion Stakes, 1985 Trusthouse Forte Mile, 1985 Prince of Wales Stakes, 1985 Coral Eclipse Stakes and 1985 Dubai Champion Stakes.
The final test of greatness was when she contested the world's richest turf race, the 1985 Breeders' Cup Turf Classic at Aqueduct - the ultimate in show-downs, when she erased all doubts with her game and determined stretch drive holding off the fast closing STRAWBERRY ROAD, the Australian globe trotter, to win at 2:27 - a new best time. In one brilliant move she'd broken records in every sense: a new best time for Aqueduct's mile and a half, a biggest ever prize for a British-trained horse, Horse-of-the-Year at home, and Eclipse award for Champion Female Turf Horse in America.
Yes, PEBBLES, England's super-filly, the heroine of that great day in New York and subsequently honored as the first British horse to receive America's prestigious Eclipse award. No award was ever better deserved when PEBBLES brought Sheik Mohammed's maroon and white silks so memorably up the Aqueduct trail in 1985. She was the ultimate proof of a whole team's brilliance: just remember Pat Eddery's unbelievable big race call; Clive Britain's so special tuning of this chestnut flyer; her owner's boldness in pitching her into the deepest most difficult whirlwind of all; and a filly with fire in the heart and lightning in her limbs. She bridged the Atlantic and she'd done more...she'd shown the uniqueness of a great horse and seared moments into memory.
A look back into the brilliant racing accomplishments of this grand filly - she paved the way for other European turf horses to begin the wave of domination in the turf races in the U.S. Breeders' Cups.
