WHITNEY HANDICAPS 1952-1987 (32-RACE SET)
The Tradition of Thoroughbred racing is synonymous with the history of Saratoga Springs, site of the oldest continually operated Thoroughbred track in the nation. The annual meet brings thousands of people each summer to this small city located at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains. August has long been the month when the activity peaks and the city bursts with action and the first major racing event held is the prestigious Whitney Handicap (Gr. I); named for the late Payne Whitney and for the Whitney family, in general, who had so much to do with American racing and Saratoga in particular. Usually run the first week of August, the Whitney Handicap for three-year-olds and up is not very old in comparison to some other stakes races at Saratoga. It did not start until 1928, a year in which the Travers Stakes was already 64-years-old and the Alabama 56-years-old, but throughout its rich history, it has compiled an impressive list of winners and participants.
This EXTREMELY rare compilation features the 1952-1987 WHITNEY HANDICAPS (except for four missing years: 1956, 1957, 1965 and 1966) 32 RACES ALL IN THEIR ENTIRETY FROM START TO FINISH! Please note: 1952-1969 (has no sound and is in B&W), 1970-1972 (has sound and is in B&W), 1973-1987 (has sound and is in color) and 1976 (has no sound but is in color).
Over the years, the Whitney has been usually won by one of the season's great handicappers...DISCOVERY won it three straight years...KELSO also pulled a triple and even a fair number of distaffers have taken on males successfully in the Whitney including GALLORETTE and LADY'S SECRET.
Some other interesting Whitney Handicap facts are that it was run at Belmont Park in 1943-1945 and in 1961; was run at weight for age prior to 1954; was run for four-year-olds and up from 1957-1969; was run at a mile and a quarter prior to 1955; OUR HOPE finished first but was disqualified in 1961; and was closed to geldings prior to 1971.
A sampling of Whitney winners and participants who went on to greatness include: TOM FOOL, SOCIAL OUTCAST, COHOES, MANASSA MAULER, KELSO, GUN BOW, MONGO, CARRY BACK, STUPENDOUS, DR. FAGER, VERBATIM, JUDGABLE, DEWAN, SHUVEE, KEY TO THE MINT, ONION, SECRETARIAT, RULE BY REASON, WEST COAST SCOUT, TRUE KNIGHT, TRI JET, STOP THE MUSIC, ANCIENT TITLE, ARBEE'S BOY, DANCING GUN, ALYDAR, J.O.
