JOHN HENRY: THE STEEL DRIVING RACEHORSE
JOHN HENRY lived from March 9, 1975 - October 8, 2007; which made him over 100 (in horse years). He earned over $6.5 million during his racing years, between 1977 and 1984. He was the winner of 30 stakes races, won the Eclipse Award for "Horse of the Year" in both 1981 and 1984 as a nine-year-old. He was even included in 1984's "People Magazine's Top People" roundup story. His rags to riches story and humble beginnings were the makings of a connection to the people unseen since the days of SEABISCUIT. Doctors, a psychic and JOHN's variety of quirky loyal fans all play an endearing role in the re-telling of his many accomplishments.
This film investigates why JOHN HENRY is so loved and pinpoints what made him such a sensation whether it be on the track or off. JOHN's many accomplishments and struggles are re-lived from the personal experiences of the men and women who were there with him by his side. Through the words of Verna Lehmann, Ron McAnally, Chris McCarron and the many other owners, trainers and jockeys involved throughout his life, this production pieces together the arduous journey that secured JOHN's legacy and enriched peoples' lives along the way. The scientific, spiritual and biological theories to JOHN's "freak of nature" cardiovascular system and ornery behavior are explored. It chronicles the life and times of this remarkable animal and includes interviews with fans, celebrities, dignitaries and other notables that knew him (or won big money from his successes).
The wake of JOHN's life and career would touch and affect everyone he came in contact with leaving behind a positive message of hope, strength and the will that anything is possible against all the odds. JOHN HENRY was an animal who inspired human beings by his free spirit, honor, intelligence, humor, love of life, and everything else life has to offer. JOHN has proved time and time again that persistence, bravery and courage can overcome misfortune and adversity; and that even the "common man" or "common horse" has the potential to be a great champion, hero, and true friend. All of us can learn from the never-ending lessons he taught us. As it was said about him: "Even though he did not always win, he never gave up." It is not about just "a horse" but about perseverance, dedication, motivation, hard work, and tenacity. It is about JOHN HENRY succeeding, winning, setting records, and capturing the hearts and spirit of thousands of fans all across the country for many years. And even now, after his death, JOHN still is an inspiration to many.
JOHN was not born into thoroughbred racing royalty; but worked, struggled, and fought valiantly for what he earned and accomplished. JOHN HENRY's passion, will, determination and "heart" made him a true champion, and definitely a legend! His rugged determination touched the hearts of racing fans everywhere. People from all walks of life felt a deep connection to this extraordinary racehorse.
