THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE HASKELL INVITATIONAL
The 1980's put the Haskell on the national map with such memorable races as SPEND A BUCK's upset by SKIP TRIAL in 1985, FORTY NINER's nose victory over SEEKING THE GOLD in 1988, and BET TWICE's win over LOST CODE and ALYSHEBA in 1987.
But to racing figures who best represent the spirit of Monmouth Park's beautiful track by the seashore are trainers Jimmy Croll and Sonny Hine who've supported Monmouth for over 40 years. Croll will always be remembered for his big gray colt, HOLY BULL - watch him break his maiden as a two-year old in 1993, his loss in the 1994 Derby, his win in the 1994 Dwyer, Met Mile and Haskell. The $22,500 bargain horse and 1996 Haskell winner, SKIP AWAY, is the horse who put the Hines' on the map; he would go on to become the 1998 Horse-of-the-Year and retired with earnings just under $10 million - the second highest earnings in racing history.
