THOROUGHBRED CLASSICS: THE BREEDERS' CUP JUVENILE
FAVORITE TRICK was a perfect eight for eight in 1997 after a dominating victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile - confirming his Horse of the Year title - only the second time in history that a two-year-old was bestowed the honor.
Over the years, Hall of Fame Trainer, D. WAYNE LUKAS, has been a dominating force in the Juvenile Colt Division of the Breeders' Cup. In the 1980's he saddled three consecutive winners - CAPOTE in 1986, SUCCESS EXPRESS in 1987 and the biggest upset in Juvenile history when IS IT TRUE held on to beat Two-Year-Old Champion, EASY GOER. LUKAS did it again when he sent out the favorite, TIMBER COUNTRY, in 1994 and BOSTON HARBOR in 1996. In all, he saddled 33 starters from 1984-2000 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and his five Championships stamped him the undisputed, "King", of the two-year-old colts on Breeders' Cup day.
Through the years not a single Juvenile winner has ever went on to win the next years Kentucky Derby but it's always the best race to judge Triple Crown potential. In fact, the inaugural running was won by CHIEF'S CROWN who went on to hit the board in all three 1985 Classic races.
A look back at some of the great races and horses of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile can be yours!
