CALIFORNIA CHROME's 2016 Pacific Classic ("TVG Classic" - Entire Televised Broadcast)
The result was never in question. CALIFORNIA CHROME was just cruising all the way around the track, too good for his competition. He came to the Del Mar stretch still full of run, and the only question became only by how much the Taylor Made Farm and Perry Martin jointly owned chestnut would hit the wire in front of his competition.
His two excellent rivals retained their position throughout, giving second place to the defending champion, BEHOLDER, with DORTMUND third while HOPPERTUNITY stayed on well on the inside to claim fourth. But,
of course, this race was all about CALIFORNIA CHROME.
Already the richest North American racehorse of all-time, and already the winner of such big races as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Dubai World Cup, the son of LUCKY PULPIT never looked finer than he did today striding out to the Del Mar wire, five-lengths the best.
"He's just an amazing horse," said a jubilant Espinoza (CHROME's regular rider). "He won so easy today. I'm going to say this now - this is the best horse I've ever ridden. I just wanted to get out there and see what was going to happen. He was going well the whole trip. He was in a perfect rhythm. The way he's running now he could beat anyone, anytime. He's run on dirt. He's won on grass. He has won all over the world. He's just so, so special."
Art Sherman, the winning trainer was equally impressed. "I saw the hold Victor had on him and he was just cruising," said Sherman. "I thought ‘It's all over' BEHOLDER was driving to catch him and I knew that if Victor had to get after him he was just going to re-break and pull away. What can you say about him he's just a super horse. That's why he's the best horse in the country."
Final time for the ten furlongs over the fast main track at Del Mar was an excellent 2:00.13. With the victory, CALIFORNIA CHROME raised his ever-growing career stats to 23-14-3-1, with better than $13 million in the bank. He is now perfect in five starts for 2016, and the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park is his late season goal. If everything goes well, he will have one more race before that, in the Grade I Awesome Again Stakes, also at Santa Anita, in October.
