The second running of the now $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational - the world's richest thoroughbred horse race, an idea hatched less than a year ago, was off to a flying start as the race was headlined by 2017 Horse of the Year, GUN RUNNER. The industry leading thoroughbred invitational was contested on January 27, 2018, at The Stronach Group's premier destination, Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and lived up to all the hype and grandeur not only for the whopping purse money but especially the widespread interest of the newly crowned 2017 Horse of the Year, GUN RUNNER, and if he would dazzle the crowd in his last race before heading off to the breeding shed by winning in dominant fashion.
The Pegasus World Cup Invitational is the vision of The Stronach Group founder, Frank Stronach, and exemplifies The Stronach Group's commitment to modernizing and elevating the sport of thoroughbred horse racing for the next generation of fans, while providing unique and lucrative opportunities for thoroughbred owners. The Stronach Group is committed to providing a deeper experience to existing fans and racing enthusiasts with exciting new events such as the innovative Pegasus World Cup Invitational which is contested at 1-1/8 miles on the dirt, is restricted to twelve (12) horses and is the first event of its kind in horse racing. Twelve (12) owners reserve a spot in the starting gate for $1 million. They can race, lease, share a starter, or sell their place in the gate. The owners will share equally in the net income from betting, media rights and sponsorships. The winner of the race will earn a world-record $7 million.
