RUN FOR THE ROSES: THE HANCOCK FAMILY ROSES
But amidst all their breeding success, no Hancock had ever stood in the winners' circle at the Kentucky Derby for more than a century - three generations of Hancocks, until 1982 when the elder Arthur Hancock III gained the respect of his family when he accepted the first Kentucky Derby trophy in the Hancock's history for his home-bred colt, GATO DEL SOL.
Next came his brother Seth's 1984 win, also with his home-bred colt, SWALE, under the schooling of legendary trainer, WOODY STEPHENS.
To cap off an unbelievable decade in the 1980's, Arthur Hancock brought the third set of Hancock roses home with his 1989 win by SUNDAY SILENCE.
By winning the Derby an astonishing three times, the Hancock name had finally made it in the Kentucky Derby record books - the fulfillment of a lifetime quest!
