GRAND NATIONALS of the 1970's (1970-1979)
First run officially in 1839, it is a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 3½ furlongs (7,141m) with horses jumping 30 fences over two circuits. The course over which the race is run - the National Course - is uniquely challenging, featuring much larger fences than those found on conventional National Hunt tracks. Many of these fences, including Becher's Brook, The Chair and the Canal Turn have become famous in their own right. These, combined with the extreme distance of the event, create what has been called, "the ultimate test of horse and rider."
The Grand National is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £975,000 (in 2013). It is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.
Aintree racecourse has overcome all the hardships and obstacles in surviving through the decades and today enjoys its most successful period in modern times.
The hallowed turf of Aintree is where legends are created, dreams realized and sporting immortality bestowed upon a select group of sporting heroes, both equine and human, who have triumphed in the greatest horse race of them all, the Grand National. Over the years the world's most famous race has brought with it its share of excitement and passion.
The 1970's - For me this was an age of innocence, a time when the National could be enjoyed for what it was - the greatest steeplechase in the world. Considering how we now watch the race in a state of almost paranoia I often find myself remembering how it used to be. Yes the Nationals of the seventies have a special place in my heart - they celebrate the Nationals of my youth. Welcome to the decade of the 70's!
Re-live the Grand Nationals from the decade of the 70's (1970-1979) all in their entirety from gate to wire.
