LANDALUCE 5-RACE TIME CAPSULE and MEMORIAL
LANDALUCE, conditioned by legendary trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, captured the public's heart as an undefeated two-year-old filly in 1982. She broke their hearts when she suddenly died, on a day meant to have marked her probable sixth victory in a row. Two weeks later, on a day that might have marked her seventh, and final victory of the season, her fans gathered at her burial at Hollywood Park to pay final tribute to the courageous filly - one of the most memorable runners of all time.
Every superlative in the books has been used to describe the brilliant two-year-old LANDALUCE; she was a lady, delicate in style, blessed with envious beauty and adorned in fine-spun charms. But hidden beneath that handsome facade was a raging fire, a competitive zeal that left her rivals in awestruck admiration. People came from miles around just to catch a glimpse of this marvelous creature. It is not often that perfection strolls by, so when it does, even the most brutish among us is compelled to yield a begrudging smile.
FINALLY...A VERY RARE 5-ENTIRE/UNCUT RACE & MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TIME CAPSULE is being offered for the courageous and striking daughter of SEATTLE SLEW - LANDALUCE. All 5 of LANDALUCE's races are shown in chronological order AND in their ENTIRETY...UNCUT!! All of the races are shown from gate to wire with most also again being re-shown in replays of the entire race being taken from different camera angles and prospectives; some also include after-race footage such as LANDALUCE racing on after the wire; winner's circle/trophy presentation and prices.
In addition, LANDALUCE's sad and somber MEMORIAL and BURIAL SERVICE of December 12, 1982, is also shown at the end of this feature.
LANDALUCE startled the racing world when she made her debut at Hollywood Park on July 3, 1982. Sent off at 80 cents on the dollar she destroyed a field of Maiden Special Weights by seven lengths in an eye-blinking time of 1:08 1/5 for six furlongs.
She proved that her first win was no fluke when exactly one week later on July 10, 1982, in the Hollywood Lassie Stakes (Gr. II), she turned in one of the most remarkable efforts by any athlete in any sport immortalizing herself. Winning by 21 lengths, she was clocked in 1:08 flat for 6 furlongs. Her margin of victory was and is the most-ever recorded for a stakes race at Hollywood Park. That victory made LANDALUCE an instant national heroine and with each successive triumph, her legion of fans grew and grew.
She would win her next three starts by a combined total of 18.5 lengths; her third start in the September 5, 1982, Del Mar Debutante (Gr. II) was business-as-usual winning by 6-1/2 lengths and stretching out to a mile for the first time.
In the Anoakia Stakes (Gr. III) at Santa Anita for her 4th start, LANDALUCE was bet down to 10 cents on the dollar and won this time by an astonishing ten lengths!
Her 5th and final start was on October 23, 1982, in the Oak Leaf Stakes (Gr. I) at Santa Anita and she proved her versatility by going further than she had ever gone at 1-1/16M and winning by 2-1/2 lengths in a time of 1:41:80 - she could do it all!!
She raced into history with this series of stakes wins, hitting her stride with remarkable victories in flawless execution. She was fearless, and as each and every pretender gave way, it was soon apparent to all that she alone deserved the crown - no California-based two-year-old had ever won an Eclipse Award before LANDALUCE.
A daughter of 1977 Horse-of-the-Year and Triple Crown winner SEATTLE SLEW, out of that great horse's first crop of foals, LANDALUCE attracted widespread attention and interest. She was a fitting daughter of the famed SEATTLE SLEW, showing early ability and the same blazing speed that characterized her sire.
After five wins, LANDALUCE was clearly racing toward an outstanding destiny, but it wasn't the kind anyone could have predicted. For on Nov 28, 1982, the classy little filly died of a bacterial infection. LANDALUCE's 6th start was to have been the Hollywood Starlet, scheduled for November 28th. She took ill on November 22nd and her condition steadily declined. On the morning of November 28th, a day that in the best of worlds she would have flown at the side of the winged horse, she died. Lukas stayed by her side during her last week of life. She died with her head cradled in his lap. Death took her suddenly that day, but not before she had crossed the line which separates merely great horses from legends.
With her unbroken string of wins, LANDALUCE had already skyrocketed into the public's hearts and affection as one of the top performers of all time. Had she not been stricken, LANDALUCE was expected to be a starter against colts for the first time on December 12, 1982, in the Hollywood Futurity but instead...a few hours before the colts slugged it out in that race, all eyes were on the Hollywood Park infield and all thoughts were on the filly who would've been one of the favorites in this race had she lived to race in it. Instead...they buried LANDALUCE by the waterfalls at Hollywood Park during a short ceremony attended by her trainer, D. Wayne Lukas; her jockey, Laffit Pincay, Jr.; track officials and stable hands.
There were no tough guys at the track that afternoon. And on this day, winning and losing weren't important. For one brief glorious moment a legend had passed by. For young and old...for ardent racing fans and for those persons who have never seen a race...for all of those people who in just a few short months developed a love affair with this promising and spirited filly comes a much overdue and well-deserved 5-RACE TIME CAPSULE and MEMORIAL TRIBUTE.
We'll never know the heights LANDALUCE may have scaled in her short but illustrious racing career but we do know that she touched many hearts along the way before her fragile life was cut short by a bacterial infection. She will never be forgotten...and for a brief moment, we were blessed to have caught a glimpse of Pegasus chasing the wind.
