WEST POINT THOROUGHBREDS: A REAL LONGSHOT
Each of these entrepreneurs took a risk, believed in their dream and, thanks to a lot of hard work and a little luck, became millionaires.
"How I Made My Millions" puts the American Dream on display and shows you that it's alive and well if you have the heart, the desire and the know-how to make it big.
Terry Finley was finishing his military service in 1990 when he and his wife bought a $5,000 horse. The horse, SUNBELT, won its first race and Terry was hooked. He decided to build on his passion for horse racing and founded West Point Thoroughbreds. He now buys 20-25 horses a year and forms groups of investors who profit when the horses win, breed and sell. Horses that have propelled West Point Thoroughbreds front and center include SEATTLE FITZ, AWESOME GEM and FLASHY BULL.
Forty years ago, horse racing and boxing were the top sports in America. The Thoroughbred world's leading owners were born into the game and they dominated racing because their parents and grandparents had done the same.
When West Point Thoroughbreds was founded in 1991, they didn't have the connections of multi-generational blue-blood horse racing society. Their first runner was a $5,000 claimer and their first investor was a pipe-fitter from Philadelphia - a far cry from the ritz and wealth families such as the Woodwards, Whitneys and Vanderbilts had. They weren't guaranteed a high-figure amount of funding and they started as outsiders, people who were fascinated by the sport and who wanted to be a part of it.
As the racing industry has changed in the past 20 years, so has West Point Thoroughbreds. Their partnership roster today includes over 500 people - from schoolteachers who come to the races on their summer break to corporate executives who fly in on their private planes.
And racing partnership groups are just as important to the racing industry as private owners. They lead the way with innovation, technology, and good business practices - offering a chance to compete at the highest levels. Investing in a partnership group such as West Point Thoroughbreds, is investing in a lifestyle, an experience. You also invest in a team of people who are passionate about getting your investment to the finish line first - and you into the winner's circle - as often as possible.
In today's unpredictable financial climate, entrepreneurs and small businesses are playing an integral role in reinvigorating the capitalist mentality amongst Americans.
