RUN FOR THE CROWN: AFFIRMED and ALYDAR w/BONUS FOOTAGE
As the horses went to the post for the 104th Kentucky Derby, their rivalry had already been established from the previous years two-year-old season when they battled it out through six sizzling races then separated: one went to the West Coast and the other remained in the East.
See the following races from their two-year old season in 1977: Youthful Stakes, Great American Stakes, Hopeful, Belmont Futurity, Champagne and Laurel Futurity.
Coming into the Triple Crown, they were like two well-established adversaries that had prepared in different places in different ways. These two horses would stage the most competitive series of races in the history of horse racing and the fans held their breath. Each race was more dramatic than the next: AFFIRMED won the Derby almost handily but then ALYDAR challenged early in the Preakness, and finally in an epic Belmont, the pair were locked in mortal combat in a stirring stretch battle that ended in a photo finish!
An unforgettable racing duo - AFFIRMED and ALYDAR - they'll forever be associated in the annals of racing.
